I think part of what gets me is how he tried to go after Shouxue-san last week, and then just does a fucking 180 this week when the killer's someone he likes better.

Yeah. What happened to Dad was the second to last episode of that season, and that's... when there's actually the potential for a big permanent change. Serious stuff doesn't happen right at the beginning of the season.
...So Luke and Dahut dying less than a week into things in a way that was clearly not intended to be comedic was... kind of hard to wrap my head around. Made it really obvious that things here weren't working by the rules I was used to. Everything's a lot more... fragile, I guess.
